Kate Moss (born January 16, 1974), is a British model who
was once the "Face of Calvin Klein". She was born
in Addiscombe, London Borough of Croydon, England.
Kate Moss was discovered at the age of 14 by Sarah Doukas
(the founder of Storm Model Agency) in 1988, at JFK Airport
in New York City. Kate Moss then went on to become the anti-supermodel
of the 90's. She ushered in the waif look (while prompting
much speculation over her weight) with a highly publicized
campaign for Calvin Klein, particularly for posing nude in
ads for its perfume brand, Obsession. However, she charmed
the fashion industry and has walked / campaigned for such
elite houses as Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Chanel,
Missoni, and David Yurman. In September 2005, after she was
filmed cutting and snorting cocaine, many of her sponsors
disassociated themselves.
Significant Others
Opting not to settle down, Kate Moss has had a series of short
term relationships, often with people in the public eye, including
American actor Johnny Depp.
On September 29, 2002, Kate Moss gave birth to her daughter
Lila Grace with her then-partner Jefferson Hack at the St.
John and Elizabeth Hospital in West London. After leaving,
Jefferson Hack, Kate Moss returned to live with a boy from
her youth, city-slicker Mark Guerriero.
However, in early 2005, Kate Moss began dating former Libertines'
frontman Pete Doherty, now of the band Babyshambles.
Kate Moss has a long history of involvement in art and music,
especially rock bands, by appearing in their videos, and with
various artists and sculptors.
In February 2005, a nude portrait by Lucian Freud of Kate
Moss while pregnant was sold for £3.93 million. Kate
Moss planned and posed for the portrait with Lila as her version
of the Madonna - a full frontal nude.
It was alleged by the media in September 2005 that Kate Moss
has had a long-standing lesbian affair with Sadie Frost. Further
allegations have been made that she has had sex with both
Sadie and her then husband Jude Law multiple times, and that
she has also been involved in lesbian threesomes with Sadie
Frost and British TV star Davinia Taylor.
Accolades
After more than a decade in the modelling business, Kate Moss
was cited by Forbes magazine as one of the most influential
and rich celebrities worldwide. She continues to be featured
on the covers of magazines like Vogue and W.
In July 2005, Moss won an award from the Fashion Designers
of America as the model who had progressed to icon status.
News
Daily Mirror front pageBritish tabloids accused Kate Moss
of cocaine abuse - esp the Daily Mirror. This claim resulted
in a retraction and damages by the Daily Mirror after a lawsuit.
On September 15, 2005, however, the London Daily Mirror ran
front page and interior photos of Kate Moss allegedly snorting
several lines of cocaine at a Babyshambles recording session.
The news including the alledged photos, appear to be clearly
the result of criminal wiretapping -- illegal photographs
and illegal eavesdropping -- those illegal acts then further
participated in by the publishing of that criminally obtained
information. And perhaps aided by payment for the info obtained
criminally.
UK tabloids as the Daily Mirror have a long history of extreme
attacks on any and all to pump newspaper sales. This latest
news about Kate Moss by the Daily Mirror appears to be a retaliation
for the damages she obtained in the lawsuit against the Daily
Mirror for their earlier printing fabricated news of drug
abuse by Kate Moss proven not true.
On 20 September 2005, the Swedish fashion retailer H&M
announced they were dropping Kate Moss for the advertising
campaign of their autumn clothes range. The contract was reportedly
worth £4 million a year. The next day, Chanel announced
that it was not renewing its contract with Kate Moss, which
was set to expire in October, although the company said that
its decision had nothing to do with the drug scandal.
On September 22, 2005, Hennes & Mauritz claimed Kate
Moss aknowledged that the allegations of drug use were in
fact true.
Furthermore, the British-based cosmetics manufacturer, Rimmel,
also announced its "dissatisfaction" with the recent
allegations against Kate Moss, and that the company was "reviewing
the terms of its contract" with the model. Rimmel is
reportedly standing by Kate Moss with ongoing work.
So far, the only company with a publicity contract with Kate
Moss that has shown any support to her is the Brazilian jewelers
H. Stern, which has declared that they "hired Moss for
her beauty, not her habits", and that "her personal
life does not concern us". However, on September 23,
2005, H. Stern had cancelled their contract with her as well.
On September 22, 2005, it was announced by various entertainment
and mainstream media outlets (Access Hollywood, Extra, the
New York Times, ...et al.) that both Chanel and Burberry (which
contribute to her reported $7 million a year income) announced
they were also dropping her.
Gambling website - nines.com - offered Moss $ 5 million to
be a spokesperson.
Kate Moss allegedly entered a rehab center to deal with her
issues on Sept 28 insisting on wearing her Gucci plug in the
lounge when she feels like it.
October 1, 2005 - Drug Studio Searched
The studio where supermodel Kate Moss allegedly snorted cocaine
has been searched by detectives, Scotland Yard said. Officers
executed a search warrant at the west London building. A police
spokeswoman said the specialist crime directorate was involved.
She would not say whether any drugs were found.Detectives
were also examining items given to them by the Daily Mirror
newspaper, which broke the drug allegations. It has been reported
that Moss, 31, had checked into the Meadows rehab clinic in
Arizona. The clinic has treated celebrities including Paul
Gascoigne, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Michael Barrymore. It
offers help to "individuals seeking treatment for recovery
from toxic and abusive living". Moss has already lost
lucrative contracts with H&M, Chanel and Burberry after
pictures appeared of her allegedly cutting up the class A
drug with a credit card. She released a statement in which
she admitted "full responsibility" for her actions
and said she was taking steps to address her problems.
Moss ended her relationship with Doherty in November 2005,
soon after he checked himself out early from the Meadows Clinic
in Arizona, failing to complete a program for drug rehabilitation.
Moss continued during this period to appear in major ad campaigns
for Dior. Moss was on the cover of the November 2005 W and
also inside in a multiple page "fashion shoot".
Friends and supporters of Moss have defended her, including
models Naomi Campbell and Helena Christensen, French actress
Catherine Deneuve, pop singer Robbie Williams, ex-boyfriend
Johnny Depp, and designer Alexander McQueen. Artist Stella
Vine also supported her, and paintings of Moss by Vine in
this incident were exhibited and reproduced in the press.
Moss herself has issued an apology, though she stopped short
of admitting drug use. "I take full responsibility for
my actions. I also accept that there are various personal
issues that I need to address and have started taking the
difficult, yet necessary, steps to resolve them," Moss
said. "I want to apologize to all of the people I have
let down because of my behavior which has reflected badly
on my family, friends, co-workers, business associates and
others."
Kate made an amazing comeback just months after the cocaine
scandal broke. Her annual earnings more than doubled after
she left rehab.
On 5 January 2006, the Metropolitan Police asked Moss to
return from the US to Britain to answer questions about the
incident. [3]. The following day, the Daily Mirror reported
that Moss would return to Britain and face arrest about allegations
of cocaine usage. She was interviewed by police in London
on 31 January 2006, with her solicitor present, but reportedly
made no admissions, and she was not arrested
Kate and Pete Doherty have since rekindled their relationship.
